Wigan Athletic crashed out of the Papa John’s Trophy at the semi-last stage with Sutton United securing an undeniably exhilarating punishment shoot-out triumph.
The League Two outfit had given as great as they’d got during the hour and a half, against a Latics side stuffed loaded with senior players.
Latics offered the ball inexpensively and Will Randall opened past Jamie Jones from short proximity.
James McClean evened out the scores with a grating drive six minutes before half-time after great work from Tom Pearce.
However, Latics couldn’t drive a victor in the final part, notwithstanding sending on Gwion Edwards, Max Power and Will Keane for the last quarter.
Goalkeeper Jones helped his buddy out by saving Sutton’s subsequent punishment, with Graeme Shinnie, Keane, McClean and Josh Magennis then, at that point, scoring theirs.
Jamie McGrath made it 6-6, albeit Tendayi Darikwa missed Latics’ seventh punishment to send Sutton to Wembley 7-6 on punishments.
